asset based capacity building

From Clients to Collaborators

An agency that delivers services to women who have experienced domestic violence used to see them solely as clients with needs. Now they have tapped into their skills and strengths by engaging them in program operations through a monthly review with staff, as well as the inclusion of program alumni in annual strategic planning exercises and as board members.

What works for clients also works for staff. A conscious effort to utilize the knowledge and skills of their employees resulted in the development of new fee-generating social enterprise programs that provide job training opportunities for clients, increase unrestricted revenue, and improve staff morale and a sense of ownership for all of the agency's programs.

By tapping into the strengths of both staff and clients, the agency has reinvigorated its mission and increased its program capacity and success rate.

"The first thing we do is teach people the difference between things they have control over and things they don't.  We help them focus on what they can control, and let go of what they can't.  They all have strengths and skills.  They can utilize these."
