asset based capacity building principles to practice

More than Just a Ride

An agency that provides transportation and other services to persons who are elderly and disabled adopted an asset-based approach that dramatically changed the impact of their services and created communities of support for participants rather than "just giving someone a ride."

The approach is simple and effective: instead of responding to a request for a service, the agency looks for ways to have the greatest impact possible. So, when matching volunteers who provide rides for clients, they look for someone who might significantly impact the quality of the client's life by providing connections to community resources and other individuals in ways that are mutually beneficial.

Increasing individual and community resilience is all about increasing connections to others. It's not about providing services alone.

"I became familiar with St. Luke's Health Initiatives' Health in a New Key philosophy.  It turned me around in my thinking.  Previously I thought more in the realm of dependence, not independence and resilience."
