In Their Own Words

connecting

"We had a call from a man whose mother didn't speak English, and she needed a ride to the doctor. Well, we don't want to get just anyone to give a ride, and this woman needed someone to communicate with. The next day I read in the paper that there was a Muslim group in a local high school. I called the teacher who was the group's sponsor, and he connected me with the group's president, whose own mother spoke the same language as the client's mother. She provided the ride and got that woman tied into a support community. It's completely changed her life.

"A man called us after he lost his wife. He called for reassurance. I asked him what he does all day. He was able to drive, and it turned out he needed to get connected with people. I asked him to volunteer, and he has been great. He has really blossomed and connected with people. Another volunteer had him over for Christmas. I never used to think this way. It is really looking past what you are hearing. Instead of just saying 'he asked for this,' I find myself saying, 'I'll just do this.'"
