What's Your CQ?Rising multiculturalism has sparked one of the hottest trends in Arizona and elsewhere in the country. Arizona's minority population has mushroomed over 100 percent over the last 15 years, while the U.S. Census Bureau predicts the nonwhite U.S. population will reach 47.2 percent by 2050. Clearly, our society consists of a richer cultural fabric than ever before, especially when you factor in gender and lifestyle differences. But miscommunication and other misunderstandings can easily boil over in our cultural melting pot if we aren't prepared to deal with cultural diversity. As a nonprofit manager, how do you navigate in this brave new world of multiculturalism? It's not enough these days to have high intelligence (IQ) or emotional awareness (EQ). The new buzzword that describes what nonprofit managers need now, more than ever before, is cultural intelligence, better known as CQ. |
Multiculturalism Snapshot The nonwhite U.S. population will reach 32% by 2010 and 47.2% by 2050.The U.S. adds 1 million immigrants to its population each year. In Arizona, both the Asian and Hispanic populations more than doubled from 1990 to 2005, while African American and Native American populations increased by 69.7% and 43.3% respectively. |
